Personality: Sama’el is a very bitter, cruel, and nonchalant person. Despite this, she is a loving mother to her ‘daughter’, Yachiru. It could be said that at times she can be a nymphomaniac, but that only happens with Zaraki. Sama’el is incredibly intelligent, specializing in cryptology and in religious history, or any history for that matter. She’s religious, but not too religious.

Biography: Sama’el Tzufit Kaahn was born on March 11, 1922 in Warsaw, Poland to a very wealthy family. Even when she was a little girl, she was very pale and had long dark hair and was skinny. She and her brother were inseparable, often seen holding hands alone. She was very studious. By the time she was 13, on her Bat Mitzvah, she had mastered the art of writing Hebrew calligraphy. She and her brother are Roh-eh Hanoled, ones who can see into the future. Her elder brother can only see events and she can only see dates. But in short, they lived a good childhood.

But that all changed when the Nazis came into power and annexed Poland. On November 9, 1938, their uncle’s shop in Vienna, Austria was ransacked by Nazis who carried sledgehammers. They dragged him into the street and beat him with the same hammers they used to break the windows on his shop. By the end, the Nazis had shipped him to Buchenwald Concentration Camp where he was shot in the back of the head. This night was known as Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass.

On September 1, 1939, the Nazi has invaded Poland. In October 1940, Sama’el, her family, and 70,000 other Jews were crammed into the Warsaw Ghetto. Four years later in 1944, when Sama’el was 22 years old, she and her brother were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp, where they received their wounds on their faces and were sent to the gas chambers. Sama’el died on December 17, 1944.

Upon arriving in the Soul Society in the arms of the Prophet Moses, Sama’el and her brother were to succeed the Commander General Yamamoto. When Yamamoto passed away in his sleep, Sama’el was proclaimed by God himself as the new Commander-General of the Seireitei.

A few months after becoming the Commander-General, Zaraki Kenpachi, the (then) new Captain of the 11th Division challenged her to a fight. She won easily, but not without punishing Zaraki first. This would become her form of punishment: flogging. In the recovery room, the two had fallen in love. Yachiru always refers to Sama’el as ‘Momma’, making her Sama’el’s ‘daughter’. When Sama’el turns 86, she and Zaraki plan on getting married. They both love each other very much.

Special Abilities:
Roh-eh Hanoled: The ability to see into the future.
Shikotsumyaku: the ability to manipulate his skeletal structure. In doing so, Sama’el can control her bone growth, density, and shape, such that she can regrow lost bones or protrude new bones from her skin like spikes (although not leaving any injury to the skin itself, as it unscathed as soon as the bone retracts). This also allows her to make her bones harder than steel, or create bone swords of such strength that they can cut through steel. She can even create a super-hard layer of bone under her skin, making her body virtually indestructible
Geokenesis: Sama'el is able to move the earth at her will.
Hydrokenesis: Able to control water at her will.
Shosen Jutsu (ninjutsu): Through the focus of chakra in one hand, Sama'el is capable of severing the opponent's muscle fibers simply by striking with her palm.
Tsutenkyaku (taijutsu): A physical move, this is merely a kick performed in the air, but with Sama'el's amazing strength, it can create far greater destruction than normally expected.
Auschwitz-Birkenau Bankai: Sama'el's bankai in which her opponent is shown how she died. Physical pain manifesting itself as psychological pain.

Attire: Sama’el wears an oversized (as in five sizes WAY too big) senior captain’s coat. Her uniform underneath is a backless shihakushou and a very long black dress.

Family:

Itzhak Lee Kaahn – Sama’el’s father, a colonel in WW I, he was sent to Bergen-Belson Concentration Camp where he was gassed.

Sascha Lindenberg Kaahn – Sama’el mother, a cello musician, she was sent to Treblinka Concentration Campt where she was worked to death.

Ariel Remiel Kaahn - Sama’el’s elder brother (by two years) and her Vice-Captain; he is married to Unohana Retsu and has a son named Tsuki Gabriel Kaahn. Very quiet and shy, Ariel also has a tendency to be bitter. He and Sama’el died in each other’s arms in Auschwitz.

Tsuki Gabriel Kaahn – Ariel and Unohana’s son, Sama’el’s nephew. A shy and pretty boy, he is good friends with Yachiru.

Relationships:

Kenpachi Zaraki – Captain of the 11th Division; Sama’el’s lover. Though he is tough and sadistic, he treats Sama’el like a delicate porcelain doll. He is often seen professing his love by kneeling and kissing the back of her hand or kissing her on the lips. Their relationship goes even deeper into true love. At times when Sama’el is sick and is bedridden, he often visits her and tells her every time, “If anyone touches you or leaves the tiniest scratch on your lovely skin, I will slit their throat open and bring you their head on a silver platter.” He is the only person who could ever love Sama’el for who she really is.

Yachiru Kusajishi – Vice-Captain of the 11th Division; Sama’el’s ‘daughter’. Yachiru sees Sama’el as her ‘mother’ and thus calls her ‘Mamma’. Little Yachiru loves Sama’el with all her heart.
